About

Questions of leadership, morale and cohesion are the main focus of our research and teaching activities. The Working Group aims to conduct cross-national studies of social and organisational aspects of leadership in a military context. In this respect, issues such as why people act as they do in stressful and extreme situations or what constitutes the nexus between leadership/followership, organisations, and culture etc., are addressed. Various case studies of leadership challenges in specific emergency situations are carried out in this field of social science research.

Key topics are:

- Leadership and communication;

- Leadership in a military context;

- Crisis leadership;

- Morale and cohesion.

ERGOMAS Workshop on Military Leadership Concepts

On the 1st and 2nd of September 2022 the Department of Leadership and Communication Studies at the Military Academy at ETH Zurich hosted an ERGOMAS workshop in Switzerland. The workshop is part of the international research project "comparative analysis of military leadership concepts". Within this research project, military researchers from across the world have been asked to contribute to the project in form of a country study on military leadership concepts. The contributors of these country studies were then invited to attend the ERGOMAS workshop. The workshop was attended by 20 representatives from 13 nations and consisted of country study presentations, as well as group discussions on leadership topics. The discussed topics included change management, resilience training, mental health, work-life-balance and future developments of military leadership.

The output of the fruitful group discussions and interesting presentations, as well as the country studies, will be published in a book by Dr. Michael Holenweger and MA Sarah von Felten in 2024.
