The work group has a long history with extensive work periods mixed with low-intensity phases. The last multinational project started at the ERGOMAS conference in Slovenia in 2002. It ended up with a ten-nation study on young military officers' development as leaders. Using a grounded theory approach, ten interviews were performed in each country. The outcome was an internationally published journal article in 2006 (see reference below).

One potential subject for a new joint research effort is a study on demands posed by irregular threats on military leadership during international missions. Irregular threats include terrorism, organized crime, child soldiers, riots, etc. The assumption is that these kinds of threats are more likely in the foreseeable future than large-scale conventional warfare.

The long-term leader of the group has been Professor Paul Bartone, USA . During the last project the leadership was shared with Professor Gerry Larsson, Sweden , who now will carry on as chair.
