News from ERGOMAS
ERGOMAS is still alive! With this words it started the last Newsletter of our Working Group, September 2007, and I can repeat them now, after the great success of the Stockholm Conference, June 22- 25 2009, under the prestigious leadership of our present Chairperson, Alise Weibull.
You can find the whole report of the conference in the ERGOMAS web site and in the ERGOMAS Newsletter.
News from the W.G.
Our W.G. hold four sessions in the Stockholm Conference and a total of 15 papers was presented out of the 22 scheduled (see appendix 1st )
Seven papers were missing because presenters weren’t able to attend the conference. We should consider that it happened mainly for financial reasons: the paper presenters that couldn’t come belong prevalently to East European countries. Therefore it would be significant to study the possibility to get funds in order to support the participation to next conference by less lucky colleagues from these countries.
During the sessions we had papers that were dealing with different aspects of the military profession and papers (particularly in the first two sessions) devoted to the military profession facing the asymmetric warfare; theme that remains central for our W.G. till next ERGOMAS Conference of Amsterdam (probably in 2011), without any exclusion of other themes related to the military profession, of course. I noticed, for instance, that a new interesting theme has been introduced in our sessions, i.e. that one of professionalization in the intelligence function: it was dealt with a paper only, but, as we use to say in my country, if they are roses, they will flourish.
About our main theme of research, I am happy to tell you that eight paper dealing with different aspects of asymmetric warfare are included in the book (edited by myself) “Military Sociology Essays in Honour of Charles C. Moskos”, that is forthcoming by the Emerald Group publisher (see Appendix 2nd ).
That theme will also be dealt with by some of us in a specific session at next IUS Conference (Chicago 23- 25 October 2009), according to the following program:
- Giuseppe Caforio : “The information society and the changing face of war”
- Hermann Jung, „Intercultural Competence on the level of Interagency”
- Joseph Soeters "The (in)adequacy of the Effect Based Approach to Operations in Afghanistan".
- Marina Nuciari :"From conventional to non-conventional to military profession what's going on in the soldier's educational field?"”
- Kadir VAROĞLU, Mesut UYAR , Ünsal Sığrı "Asymmetric Warfare and Professionalization Process in the Turkish Armed Forces".
- Leena Parmar „26/11,2008: what it means to India and Indian people“
Future projects
As I already wrote, the theme of the military profession facing the asymmetric warfare remains central for our W.G. till next ERGOMAS Conference.
However, there is always room for new projects, new proposals. Therefore, every proposal for a new project, a new theme of research is welcomed. Write me and we will check and discuss each proposal together through e mail.
